Paul F Taylor: Head in the Clouds is a show that allows comedian Paul F. Taylor to explore his own diagnosis of ADHD and the effect that it has had on his life. After a few jokes to open the show, Taylor opens up a large container that has been sitting onstage behind him, causing many balloons to float out. Each balloon has a word written on it and, when selected by Taylor, will become the subject of the next segment of the show. There is one black balloon lurking in the back, a darker thought that comes to light later in the show.
The jokes themselves are quite good and I really enjoyed hearing Taylor’s opinions on a range of subjects. There are also moments of sweetness and reflection that are unexpected for an hour of stand-up but make for good storytelling. There are some bits that go on for a bit too long, including a mime routine that feels like it goes on for ages, particularly when audience members are brought onstage to participate and struggle with knowing what to do.
Unfortunately, the show felt quite unrehearsed, with Taylor struggling multiple times to find particular balloons and quickly growing frustrated with himself. There were a few subjects that were missed as Taylor was distracted and did not return to things he had begun. Another major issue was his reaction to people leaving the show, sometimes simply to use the toilet and come back, which sent him off onto ranting tangents laced with aggression that made me slightly uncomfortable and wanting to leave myself.
Ultimately, Paul F Taylor: Head in the Clouds is a show with an interesting concept and a good message of living life in your own way, this particular performance was disorganised, leading to some disappointing moments and no real throughline. Had it been a bit more polished, I believe I would have enjoyed it more, as even though Taylor does emphasise that he has his “head in the clouds,” there is a good structure to the show and it truly could be great.
Paul F Taylor: Head in the Clouds ran on 4 May at Soho Theatre. More information on the run can be found here.
